Mrs. Zora D. Jarrard


Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at Macedonia Baptist Church for Mrs. Zora D. Jarrard, 96, of 2385 Porter Springs Road, Dahlonega. The remains will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m.

The Rev. Keith Allison, the Rev. Junior Abernathy and the Rev. Dean Bryant will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

The family received friends Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Jarrard died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003, at Chestatee Regional Hospital following a period of declining health.

A native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County, Mrs. Jarrard was born Nov. 23, 1906, and was the daughter of the late James Martin and Zera Alice Anderson Duckett. Mrs. Jarrard attended North Georgia College and was a 1934 graduate of the University of Georgia where she received her bachelor of science degree. Mrs. Jarrard taught school in the Lumpkin County Public School System and retired after 37 years of service. Mrs. Jarrard was a member of the Blue Mountain Chapter No. 333 Order of Eastern Star, where she was elected worthy matron 1966-1967, elected in 1973 as secretary and held that position until 1996. She served as associate matron, conductress, associate conductress and Martha station.

Mrs. Jarrard received the Community Service Award from the Retired Teachers' Association, was treasurer of the Lumpkin County Retired Educators' Association 1978-1988 and in 1997 received the Emeritus Member Award from the Georgia Retired Educators' Association. Mrs. Jarrard was the oldest living member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Lumpkin County. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Richard O. Jarrard; sisters, Mae Duckett and Blanche Gooch; and brother, Rufus Duckett.

Survivors include her sister, Estelle Jarrard, Cleveland; nieces and husbands, Montine and Harold Wooten and Kathy and Robbie Adams, all of Dahlonega, Rita and Linton Holcomb, Hartwell, and Carolyn Adams, Mobile, Ala.; nephew and wife, Maurice and Eleanor Gooch, Dahlonega; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
